Hypnotism is used to treat people of problems regarding mental and psychological issues. Through that, the subjects – those who are succumbed to experience the hypnotism – are in therapy. They need the help of a hypnotist to urge themselves to change something in them: Stop smoking. Lose weight. Be a good parent. Be a loving husband. Quit putting others first all the time. And many more matters concerning one’s being. But is it really real? Can you really hypnotize someone?

Contrary to what others believe, if done with total submission, focus and positive attitude, hypnotism is very effective. You may not even know it, but in your day to day life, unconsciously, you are being hypnotized. Have you ever wondered why you cry during the sad moments of a movie? Can you really hypnotize someone just by merely watching TV?

The answer is yes and the following sentences will explain the why and how.

This is what hypnotherapists commonly call as Hypnotic State. During this state, both the subconscious and conscious minds are receptive to suggestions and the comments being proposed are retained without judgments and criticisms. After the hypnosis, the subject will most likely be following what was told to him or her.

Going back to the movie, it explicitly portrays that the heroine is terribly wronged by her husband who left her for another woman much sexier, more beautiful and successful professionally. She has with her four kids to raise, no job and no money. Her daughter asks if there is food to eat since it is Christmas. Her eldest son inquires if they are staying on this 2-room apartment, without central heater, for good. The woman goes to the kitchen, fixes a cake and puts it on the table. She answers her kids with: We’re together and that’s what matters. She goes inside the tiny comfort room, opens the shower, sits on the floor and cries…

Can you really hypnotize someone? There is no doubt about that. The movie just hypnotized you. You being the subject, submitted, focused and with an opened mind – you cry as well, feeling the feeling of the heroine in the movie. You put yourself in her shoes. You understood what was happening to her. It captured you and you learned from her mistakes and her ordeal. You can apply it in real life.

This is just one state of hypnotism experienced by people who are fully aware and wide awake. And if you ask again, can you really hypnotize someone by just acting out in front of them like what the actress did in the movie?

Answer your own question, then.

One of the many uses of hypnotism – weight loss, can be easily achieved through direct sessions with a certified hypnotherapist or a clinical psychologist who uses hypnotherapy to augment his treatment regimens. The United States has the highest per capita percentage of people considered obese. One is considered obese if their weight is twenty five percent higher than the ideal weight for their frame type, height and age. For example, my ideal weight is 175 pounds for a male, age 50, 5′ 10″ and average frame. If I weighed 220 pounds I would be considered obese.

The United States also has the highest percentage of obese children under the age of ten in the world. This is a sad commentary on how we view our own eating habits and quality of health along with our children’s. With the New Year approaching many people are going to put “losing weight” as one of their New Year’s resolutions and many gym memberships will be purchased (as many as half will be abandoned by the end of February) and fewer than ten percent of the people who do not employ the use of outside aides will achieve their weight loss goals.

Claims that hypnotism for weight loss will work on anyone is absurd and the people who claim this to be true should be avoided at all costs. Hypnotism is a great way to focus your mind and to have greater relaxation and relief from stress in your life. The only problem with hypnotism is that you have to be willing to be hypnotized for it to work well and many people think that hypnosis is a parlor game or magic trick that is not to be taken seriously. There are many psychologists that use hypnosis as a way to reinforce positive behaviors to help modify a patient’s daily routine and achieve their goals.

A hypnotist will not be able to help you lose weight if you truly do not want to lose weight. If you go to a hypnotist for help at the urging of someone else without making the decision on your own the therapy will take much longer to work and may not help you get to your weight goal. Hypnosis can help you focus on eating healthy foods, exercise on a regular basis and focus on the positive aspects of losing weight and getting fit. I recommend hypnotism – weight loss, for anyone who has a hard time keeping their weight down.

People have also reported phenomenal results with hypnotism – weight loss that uses binaural beats. It’s cutting edge technology that is embedded in MP3 format and can be used for self hypnosis.
During my training as a professional hypnotherapist and during the many years that led to my instructor status involving Neuro-Linguistic Programming, I constantly heard my teachers espousing the wonders of Dr. Milton H. Erickson. Yes, it was Erickson, who has been called the Father of American Hypnotherapy, who gave us tremendous insights into permissive approaches to hypnosis. However, as the cult of Ericksonian followers emerged, it seems that an entire universe of very effective hypnosis was completely whitewashed from the realm of clinical application. Indeed, many authors and self-styled experts – to include international associations that claim the authority to certify hypnotherapists – fail to recognize the power of relatively rapid and direct approaches using suggestion and imagination to heal the mind and body.

The indirect, naturalistic, and permissive Ericksonian approaches are currently dominating medical and psychological applications of hypnosis. They are elegant and particularly suited to fearful and resistant subjects. Clearly, a competent clinician should strive to master the many techniques associated with this system. Nevertheless, should one limit their education solely to the development of such skills, I am afraid to point out that their arsenal of hypnotherapy talents will remain stilted and ineffective in many situations. This is unfortunate, as there are a breadth of highly effective techniques available to the practitioner who seeks to fully understand the wealth and true nature of hypnosis in the healing arts.

Unfortunately, among many of the licensed professionals there seem to be an unjustified prejudice regarding non-Ericksonian skills. In fact, many a publication seeks to establish the credibility of the author’s ideas by unjustly – with limited and uneducated insights – denigrating the traditional skills, usually by using the term authoritarian to bash them. Most of them fail to realize that these near-mythological rants simply stem from a rather emotional dislike between Dr. Erickson, and his chief rival David Elman, a former radio personality and stage hypnotist, who taught thousands of medical doctors and dentists during the 1950’s and 60’s. This rift has been further exacerbated by a handful of Ericksonian-oriented associations who continue the irrational exclusivity proposed by Erickson. The truth, however, is that the techniques taught by Elman were as brilliant in their own right as those of Dr. Erickson.

While Elman was never licensed in the medical or mental health fields, his ideas appear to have been a merger between his traditional direct approaches – which were apparently influenced by stage hypnosis techniques – and his thorough studies of a long line of medical and psychological authorities such as Hippolyte Bernheim, MD, and Henri Munro, MD. It was his effective synthesis of his practical stage-oriented skills with his profound understanding of medical applications of hypnosis that prompted a group of New Jersey physicians – which I believe to be frustrated students of Dr. Erickson – to approach Elman and request that he instruct them on the proper use of hypnosis in medicine. Even though he was quite clear that he lacked formal medical qualifications, he found that his talents were very congruent with the needs of the doctor’s patients.

Elman’s contributions were many. His students learned quick 3-minute techniques that soon evolved into 1-minute techniques and even the wonderful skill of Waking Hypnosis. (The level of trance created by these physicians would never have been achieved using Erickson’s methods.) Add to this the ability to rapidly create levels of trance sufficiently deep for use during extensive surgery. While in my exhaustive study of Elman I found he had difficulty with about 10% of his subjects, he was able to achieve results in many situations that Erickson regarded as impossible.

I have been teaching Elman Hypnotherapy – as well as Ericksonian hypnosis – for several years now. My students have reported very interesting results. This includes medical doctors giving what would normally be painful inoculations without the awareness of their patients and removing sutures and stitches without any form of anesthesia. Also, psychologists and counselors mentioned elegantly relieving pre-surgical stress and alleviating lower back pain. All of this was done not by authoritatively barking commands at a surprised subject, but with the calm, respectful tone that is normally attributed to the permissive practitioner.

A competent, professional hypnotherapist and any licensed professional that regularly employs hypnosis in a medical or mental health practice must become proficient in the wider range of skills. By understanding the that basis of hypnosis is the bypass of resistance and empowering efficient selective thinking, the breadth of the clinicians skills can provide a multitude of approaches to what is a very powerful, yet simple healing technique.

If you spend some time searching on the web you’ll find that free self hypnosis scripts are available for anyone to use. No matter what the reason for wanting to hypnotize yourself, whether you want to lose weight, stop smoking, or anything else, there is a free self hypnosis script on the internet that can help you.

If weight loss is your goal but you find that you lack the desire to exercise or diet, then self hypnosis may be an option you want to look into. Although free self hypnosis scripts are easily obtainable on the internet, it’s important that you follow the procedure correctly if you want the hypnosis to work.

Relaxation and really being able to get to a place where you can tap into your subconscious is what self hypnosis is all about. Because your subconscious is not able to distinguish between reality and fantasy, some people are afraid of it. The upside to using free self hypnosis scripts is that you have control over the entire procedure and can stop whenever you wish, whereas when you are being hypnotized by another person you’re giving the entire control of your mind to someone else.

After you’ve found a comfortable place to perform the hypnosis and are in a relaxing position, you’re going to want to start by meditating, completely clearing your mind, and then begin the suggestion process. You’re going to start the procedure slowly with the suggestions for whatever problem you’re looking to fix. At this point you should have already decided what your goal is before you began the relaxation.

For example, if you’re looking to lose fifty pounds, say to yourself in a calm, soothing voice, “You will go for a walk for ten minutes every day for the next three days.” And you’re going to keep repeating this phrase to yourself until it sinks into your subconscious. Don’t be surprised if for the next three days you suddenly have an urge to go for a walk. In order for the free self hypnosis scripts to work you may have to repeat the process a few times.

Free self hypnosis procedures work, and can in fact be an easy process. You shouldn’t expect to work magic with free self hypnosis, but you’ll definitely be able to accomplish a lot of same things that paid hypnosis would.

If you’re having trouble quitting smoking then you owe it to yourself and your lungs to learn about self hypnosis. This article will discuss the difference between an ex-smoker and a new non-smoker. How your bad habit keeps bringing it’s self back and also why hypnosis is the only way to truly break your habit.

If you’d like to kick the habit and quit smoking you want to really become a new non-smoker instead of an ex-smoker. An ex-smoker will continue to crave a cigarette years and years after they’ve consciously quit. This means the ex-smoker is always susceptible to restarting the habit. Especially if they go through a low point in their life. A new non-smoker on the other hand is someone who has reconditioned or reprogrammed their mind to never again desire a cigarette. This can make a huge difference. The non-smoker is truly free, while the ex-smoker must constantly battle the desire for another smoke.

A person’s addiction regardless if its for smoking or sex or anything else has a life of it’s own. And that addiction resides in a person’s unconscious mind. Like most everything else the addiction wants to live and grow stronger. Now consciously you can defeat your addiction for a certain amount time, years even, but the addiction is still alive, lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to reappear. Most often it reappears at a moment in ones life where they are facing numerous challenges. If those challenges should start to overwhelm a person they will often revert back to their old habits looking for that something familiar.

So how does hypnosis work to help you end your addiction? And is it really that easy? Well because the addiction lives in your unconscious mind that’s where one must go to defeat it. Or more correctly to re-progam the unconscious to deal with stress in a more appropriate, beneficial way. A hypnosis program will initially put you into a very relaxed state somewhat like a trance. From this trance like state your unconscious mind can be reached very easily. With the proper type of programming your unconscious mind begins to change. Major changes can occur after just a few sessions if the programming is good.

So, we’ve looked at the difference in the levels of quitting smoking. Becoming a non-smoker should be your goal over being an ex-smoker. If you’ve become an ex-smoker congratulations but remember your addiction isn’t really gone it’s still there waiting to reassert it’s self. The only way to truly become a non-smoker is to reprogram your unconscious mind. The beauty of self hypnosis is that you can get an inexpensive session program specific to your goal and use it as often as you need to. The relaxation levels you can attain are beneficial in their own right. The way these hypnosis sessions work is very similar to the methods today’s star athletes use to maximize their athletic performances. Its weel worth your time to investigate hypnosis further.

I struggled with my demons after a divorce and I know the pain and stress of dealing with an addiction. It wasn’t until I started using an hypnosis program that things really changed for me. Check out my blog post about it to learn more.
The power of the mind over the body is undeniable. Science has for a long time now been providing proof for this fact. Patients in chronic pain can use mental exercises to reduce their perception of discomfort. People vulnerable to heart attacks can learn how to mentally slow down their heart rate, people suffering from stress can learn how to use their minds to reduce their blood pressure, women have been taught how to control pain in child birth, and even operations have been performed using hypno-anesthesia.

As well as this, no matter what supposedly incurable diseases there are, there is always somebody who has been cured of it. You may have heard of the miracle man, Morris Goodman, who crashed his airplane and was told he would be a “vegetable” for the rest of his life. He was told he would never breathe on his own without a respirator, he was told he would never walk again. As he says, the only thing he had was his mind, but as long as you have your mind you can put things together again – and this is what he did. As he began to breathe on his own again, the medical team couldn’t work out how he had done it. As he walked out of the hospital, they didn’t understand that either. It didn’t make medical sense, but there is no denying that he healed himself through the power of the suggestions which he gave to himself. And every human being has this ability, this power, within them.

There is no doubt that the mind does indeed control the body. This idea has been known and acknowledged in all ancient cultures across the globe – Greece, China, India, Hawaii, etc. It is only in the Western world where medical research has somehow, over time, come to view the mind and body as separate entities rather than treating the whole person in a holistic manner. But there is now a return towards the acknowledgment of this mind-body connection. There is an increasing body of scientific evidence which reflects this and at the same time proves that the mind controls the body.

In the 1920’s Dr Edmund Jacobson, physiologist and foremost researcher on relaxation, proved that when one has stressful anxious thoughts one cannot have relaxed muscles. More recently, Herbert Benson, medical doctor at Harvard Medical School, stated that “because of the fundamental unity of the mind and body it is impossible for one aspect to be relaxed while the other is tense”.

In a meta-study on the effective use of adjunct hypnosis with surgical patients, researchers at the Mount Sinai School of medicine in New York found that patients in hypnosis treatment groups had better clinical outcomes than 89% of patients in control groups. Not only that, they discovered that this result was irrespective of the method of hypnotic induction, be it live or recorded.

With a large, and growing, number of medical experts asserting that over 90% of all illness stems from the mind it should not be too surprising to find that mental solutions and psychological treatments for physical disorders are becoming more mainstream. Self hypnosis is a perfect example.

One of the most popular and successful psychological methods for the treatment of physical illness is hypnosis. How the hypnotic process actually works is, surprisingly, still a mystery to modern science. However, its effects are well documented.

Although many people consider hypnosis to be some form of mind control that is influenced upon you by another person this could not be further from the truth. Because we give the hypnotist permission to guide us into trance all hypnosis is actually self hypnosis. You do not surrender your will to a hypnotist nor would you follow his every instruction blindly.

When you are hypnotized you are still in full control. However, as you have agreed to surrender a certain amount of control to the hypnotist you feel that you want to please him and are much more likely to accept his suggestions and believe everything he says.

So, how can this self hypnosis state be used to promote better states of physical well-being and even eliminate some illnesses?

Well, research has shown that our thoughts have a dramatic effect on our health and general well-being. Our thoughts themselves are merely reflections of the bleifs we hold and these beliefs are themselves slaves to our emotions. Our emotions, in turn, are greatly influenced by our past experiences and how we view them in the present. Being able to alter all of these is one of the most powerful benefits of using self hypnosis.

Through self hypnosis it is possible to alter how we view our past experiences and remove or change the emotional charges we hold against them. Similarly we can also create visions of our future, with self hypnosis, and infuse these visualizations with positive, affirming emotions. The visions produced under self hypnosis are stored in the mind for latter access. When the mind calls up information from its subconscious storehouse it then reads from these visions and uses them as a blueprint for how it views the world.

As a health-aid it is therefore the role of self hypnosis to alter our internal belief systems to correspond to thinking process that promote health and general good well-being. To achieve this our emotions to certain beliefs must also be changed. This has proven to be difficult, time-consuming and slow with conventional psychological methods – this is not the case with self hypnosis however!

Anyone can use self hypnosis to enter a state of trance. Once in this relaxed state worded statements can be directed to the subconscious mind and visualization techniques used to change beliefs, thoughts, emotions and behaviours. This can be achieved with any subject matter. In fact, it can take as little as one session to accomplish this and no more than a few sessions a week over a period of one month.

As far as health goes self hypnosis can create dramatic changes in the body. As the human brain is the center, or controller, of the complex nervous system of the body it has the ability to send and receive signals from all parts of the body. The brain’s ability to be in contact with the whole body and send instructions means that it has the ability to instruct cells and nerves to begin repair or reconstruction of any damaged system. As you can have direct access to the brain you can literally program it with your own instructions!

With self hypnosis you can gain access to the part of the mind known as the subconscious and program in instructions that have a dramatic effect on how the brain interacts with the nerves and cells of your body. Through the use of self hypnosis techniques you can actually change the blueprint your mind holds of your body to reflect health, strength and wellness. When the brain then accesses the subconscious mind to send instructions to your nerves and cells it reads this newly programmed blueprint imprinted on it through self hypnosis and immediately instructs the rest of the body to follow it – much like a computer system.

Therefore if your health is an issue that you would like to deal with my advice is simple. Apply some easy to learn self hypnosis techniques or use well-established self hypnosis recordings and you will change your mind and ultimately your body!

Lose Weight Now

Help increase metabolism with self-hypnosis, and start upon the path to a thinner, healthier “you.” The fact is, your metabolic rate is one of the most important components of weight control. Unfortunately, while some people seem “blessed” with a rapid metabolism, others are “cursed” with a slow metabolic rate. Fortunately, there’s a safe, natural way to compensate for situations where genetics have been less than generous to your body. That way is through self-hypnosis.

Your Body Is A Machine

Your metabolic rate is the rate at which your body processes the food you consume, and converts it into energy. If you’re struggling with obesity–or even if you have merely a somewhat above-average weight for your height, and you’re interested in slimming down–increasing your metabolism is going to be as important as diet and exercise. In fact, exercise and a proper nutrition plan often help raise your metabolic rate. However: did you know that hypnosis can offer you additional support in your weight control efforts?

Not All Bodies Are Created Equal

Everyone has known someone who constantly eats junk food, never exercises, doesn’t get proper nutrition, and, yet, continues to strut around looking like a lean and hungry wolf. Like the character Jughead in the Archie comics, these people remain stick-thin despite regularly eating eight hamburgers a day. At the same time, others are stuck eating wilting salads, only to remain overweight for years. The culprit behind these imbalances? Metabolism. To control your weight, you need to learn to control your metabolic rate.

What To Do If Your Metabolism Has Betrayed You

Start exercising. Putting your body through rigorous physical exertions causes it burn energy at a much faster rate than just sitting in front of your computer. In other words: exercise, and you’ll raise your metabolic rate. Nutrition–that is, what you eat, and not just how much or how little–can help raise your metabolic rate. However, diet, although a good support, won’t necessarily control your weight by itself. You need to actually get beat your body into increasing its metabolic rate.

Unhealthy Ways To Speed Up Your Energy Intake

“Sure,” you say, “But regular exercise requires the kind of immense willpower that I just don’t have.” For many people, that statement means they must rely on unhealthy ways of speeding up their bodies’ energy consumption to stay thin. These people boost their metabolism with addictive diet pills, or perhaps even illegal drugs. They “succeed,” to a point: at the expense of their health and, often, their very sanity, they achieve a sickly, skeletal appearance. Like victims of a plague, these people often end their days struggling to even walk, their spindly legs unable to support their own meager weight.

Hypnosis Can Help Increase Metabolism

Is there a better, healthier way to raise your metabolic rate. Yes: hypnosis, which targets your mind, as well as your body. Self-hypnosis lets you send orders to your body via your unconscious mind, all from the comfort of your home. Your mind can will your body to exercise more, or to burn calories faster. In this way–gently, naturally, and without resorting to dangerous or illegal means–self-hypnosis can help increase metabolism.

The Ornish Diet is a low fat, vegetarian diet plan. Combining the eating plan, exercise, and stress-management techniques of this plan results in weight loss and improved health for most people. Although this diet plan requires more dedication than many other diets, and often requires big lifestyle changes for the dieter, studies have shown that it is effective for both losing weight and helping to reverse heart disease. With its focus on stress management and healthy food choices, this diet is also a great candidate for combined use with weight loss hypnotherapy.

The Ornish diet comes in two, slightly different formulations, a Reversal diet and a Preventative diet. The Preventative diet is excellent for people who need to lose weight and lower their risk for heart disease. It is also ideal for people looking to lower their cholesterol levels. The Reversal diet is designed for people already afflicted with heart disease who want to reverse the effects of the condition and reduce their risk for heart attacks.

Both versions of the Ornish program recommend a nutritional approach that is made up of 10% fat, 20% protein, and 70% complex carbohydrates. Under the diet, all meat, fish, and poultry are to be avoided. All fats, seeds, nuts, and oils are also banned. Refined carbohydrate foods such as white rice and white flour are also not permitted, but whole grain bread and pasta, beans, and legumes are permitted.

Foods allowed in limited portions include egg whites and fat free dairy products such as nonfat cheeses, milk, and yogurt. Most convenience foods are to be avoided, since any processed foods with more than two grams of fat in one serving are banned.

The diet allows you to eat whole grains, fruit, beans, and vegetables at each meal until you feel full. The benefit of this program is that since you are allowed to consume as much as you want of allowed foods, you can feel full and satisfied all the time. This program, unlike many others, is not based around unhealthy “starvation” methods.

In addition to the diet plan, another key aspect of the Ornish diet program is stress-management. There are many stress-reducing practices you can use, such as yoga, meditation, and hypnosis. Hypnotherapy is ideal for alleviating anxiety and tension while supporting natural weight loss. Hypnotherapy techniques work by guiding your unconscious mind to having positive thoughts instead of negative ones when you start to feel anxious. These techniques are extremely effective in reducing stress levels.

While the Ornish plan is healthy and effective for most people, it can be difficult to follow because it involves many restrictions. This diet and others similar to it often fail because people are unable to stick to them. Many people struggle with dieting because they suffer from an uncontrollable appetite, uncontrollable cravings, compulsive overeating, or a simple lack of motivation to stick to a weight loss program. These obstacles keep many hard-working dieters from maintaining their diet and achieving permanent weight loss. Hypnotherapy helps you beat these obstacles, and is an effective complement to the Ornish diet plan because it offers powerful motivation to stay on a weight loss plan.

Hypnosis works to control and regulate the appetite by “reprogramming” the unconscious mind to eliminate and replace bad habits with good ones. Years of unhealthy eating habits such as “emotional eating” can cause people to eat impulsively, even when they are not hungry. Hypnosis breaks unhealthy associations with food and our feelings to stop this conditioned response and end emotional eating. Hypnosis can further influence dieting success by replacing the overeating response with another activity, such as exercise. This way, instead of getting urges to overeat, you will have the motivation to exercise for your health.

Hypnosis can also be used to quell the emotional anxieties that keep you from losing weight. For many people, being overweight provides a “secondary gain” in the form of a sense of safety or emotional protection. For example, many people with low self-esteem are afraid of people not liking them, so they use their extra weight as a reason to believe that others will dislike them. Through hypnotherapy, we can think positively and focus on improving our health instead of becoming overwhelmed by such anxieties. We can use hypnotherapy to improve our self-esteem, to clearly see our self-worth and commit to our personal health.

Hypnotic therapy offers a strong, natural combination of stress relief, motivation, and behavior regulation to promote weight loss and help you follow your diet of choice. Using hypnosis with the Ornish plan is particularly effective, but hypnosis therapy is great for helping people stay committed to any diet plan. Hypnosis promotes the success of diet programs along with natural weight loss so people can enjoy permanent results.

Past Life Regression (PLR) appears to be on the increase within the Hypnotherapy community with many therapists offering it as an additional service to clients. From a therapeutic standpoint PLR can be very beneficial, however much of what takes place in a PLR session can be tied back to events in a clients life that has been ’shut off’ into a previous life persona. Working within the reference of a Past Life can be very beneficial, but what it isn’t, is a real historical personal history.

I have no doubt that this will sit badly with those people who want Past Life Therapy, or want to relive their ‘history’, but I am a realist, and I work extensively with clients who have real problems in the here and now and I would much rather solve them in this lifetime, than one that didn’t happen.

There are 2 clear issues with Past Life Regression, the first is the matter of the numbers. There have been more people alive in the last 50 years than in all of the rest of history put together. What this means is that a very small percentage of people can have a past life beyond the 50-year mark, and certainly far less can have multiple past-lives.

The second issue relates to those population figures and is highlighted by what happened in my practice some years ago. In July of 2007 I had 2 women visit on different days, for different conditions, during both session spontaneous PLR happened, both regressions back to the same person – Cleopatra. I know that she is supposed to have been quite disturbed, but it’s no wonder as she obviously had far to many people in her head!

Fortunately in both cases I was able to resolve the their problems, which (unsurprisingly) was found to have its roots in their ‘past life’, by working on solving it in the present rather than leaving it in the past.

This showed that PLR therapy is useful and helpful for some clients, what it is not is a therapy in its own right, and offering it as a service undermines what can really be achieved with Hypnosis.

Past Life Regression has a (small) place in Clinical Hypnosis, but let us be clear on what that place is and not fall foul of the mumbo-jumbo and mysticism that has held Hypnosis back for centuries.
