<p>When I was in my teens I read a book about Edgar Cayce. If you&#8217;ve never heard of him, Cayce was a devout Christian, but many consider him the founder of the New Age Movement. For forty-three years Cayce would put himself into a self-induced state of relaxation which enabled him to answer questions (readings) and diagnose people he had never met.</p>
<p>With only the name and location of a person, Cayce would speak in a normal voice and give readings to any questions about that person that he was asked. Most of the readings were given for people who were sick, and many of the cures he recommended are still in use today.</p>
<p>Of course this peaked my curiosity about hypnosis, and I built up quite a library on the subject.</p>
<p>There are plenty of stories about hypnosis being used in negative ways as well, and frankly these stories are what kept me on the fence about using it personally for a number of years.</p>
<p>In his book, <em>The Man Who Invented Hitler</em>, historian David Lewis revealed that Adolf Hitler was once hypnotized. Apparently, Hitler lost his sight near the end of World War I due to hysterical blindness. Through hypnosis, a doctor suggested to Hitler that through will power he could make himself see again. It seems that the suggestion worked.</p>
<p>What finally got me off the fence was my own competitiveness. I wanted to do well at a school debate, and I was tired of losing &#8212; well repeatedly coming in second &#8212; to the same person. When you need an edge you&#8217;ll try anything once, and I did. I tried a self hypnosis session, and I got the result I was after. Since then, hypnosis is part of my self-help arsenal.</p>
<p>In truth, hypnosis isn&#8217;t good or bad &#8212; it&#8217;s neutral. It might help you and change your life forever, or you may be completely unchanged after a session. It may only work for a period of time. Your results will depend on factors such as motivation and determination. Your destiny is still in your own hands.</p>

<p>When you set out to write a self hypnosis script, you probably already have a goal in mind, but exactly how you define your goal has more impact on your success than many people realize. The more carefully you define your goal, the more effective you can be in preparing your subconscious mind to focus on what you really want and boost your chances of creating the result you want.</p>
<p>Here are four power questions to ask yourself when defining your goal for a self hypnosis script. Use these questions to clarify your goal and focus your subconscious mind on achieving exactly what you want.</p>
<p><strong>What do you want?</strong> Write down what you want to accomplish.</p>
<p><strong>What will having this do for you</strong>? Ask this question to make sure that you have identified what is most important to you. For example, if your goal is to increase your income by 50%, ask yourself what would having that do for you. If your answer is that it would give you more time with your family, you may want to focus on your real goal of having time with your family rather than making more money. Focusing on making more money could easily take you away from having more time with your family. So if you set the wrong goal you could end up sabotaging your real success. For this reason, it&#8217;s important that you define your goal as your real desired end result rather than some intermediate means to an end.</p>
<p><strong>How will you know when you have it?</strong> Write down the specific things that will be your evidence for success. These may be tangible things like &#8220;I will lose 5 pounds by January 31&#8243; or intangible things like &#8220;I will wake up feeling good about myself.&#8221; The more specific you are here, the more precisely your subconscious mind will know what you want to achieve. If you cannot answer this question easily, stick with it until you have a clear answer that will give exact guidance to your subconscious mind. The more clearly you define your evidence of success in sensory terms &#8211; things you can see, hear, feel, smell and taste &#8211; the more useful the guidance will be to your subconscious mind through your self hypnosis script. Your subconscious mind really cannot relate to something abstract like having an income of $5,000 per day, but it can relate to something sensory like waking up feeling good about your accomplishments every morning.</p>
<p><strong>Where, when and with whom do you want it?</strong> Define the specific contexts where you want to accomplish this goal. For example, if you want to be more self confident, with whom do you want to feel confident, in what situations, while you&#8217;re doing what activities? When you answer this question, you should be able to vividly imagine yourself in the exact situations and with the specific people you want to accomplish this goal. The more vividly you can image the end result, the more your subconscious mind will have to work with to create what you want.</p>
<p>Once you have identified your goal using the questions above, make sure that it is written in positive rather than negative terms. For example, a negative goal statement would be &#8220;Stop feeling bad about myself&#8221; while a positive goal statement would be &#8220;Start feeling good about myself.&#8221; Research has shown that people who focus on positive goals are significantly more successful than people who focus on negative goals.</p>
<p>This is especially true when setting goals that will be given to your subconscious mind during your self hypnosis session.</p>

<p>Past Life Regression (PLR) appears to be on the increase within the Hypnotherapy community with many therapists offering it as an additional service to clients. From a therapeutic standpoint PLR can be very beneficial, however much of what takes place in a PLR session can be tied back to events in a clients life that has been &#8217;shut off&#8217; into a previous life persona. Working within the reference of a Past Life can be very beneficial, but what it isn&#8217;t, is a real historical personal history.</p>
<p>I have no doubt that this will sit badly with those people who want Past Life Therapy, or want to relive their &#8216;history&#8217;, but I am a realist, and I work extensively with clients who have real problems in the here and now and I would much rather solve them in this lifetime, than one that didn&#8217;t happen.</p>
<p>There are 2 clear issues with Past Life Regression, the first is the matter of the numbers. There have been more people alive in the last 50 years than in all of the rest of history put together. What this means is that a very small percentage of people can have a past life beyond the 50-year mark, and certainly far less can have multiple past-lives.<span id="more-224"></span></p>
<p>The second issue relates to those population figures and is highlighted by what happened in my practice some years ago. In July of 2007 I had 2 women visit on different days, for different conditions, during both session spontaneous PLR happened, both regressions back to the same person &#8211; Cleopatra. I know that she is supposed to have been quite disturbed, but it&#8217;s no wonder as she obviously had far to many people in her head!</p>
<p>Fortunately in both cases I was able to resolve the their problems, which (unsurprisingly) was found to have its roots in their &#8216;past life&#8217;, by working on solving it in the present rather than leaving it in the past.</p>
<p>This showed that PLR therapy is useful and helpful for some clients, what it is not is a therapy in its own right, and offering it as a service undermines what can really be achieved with Hypnosis.</p>
<p>Past Life Regression has a (small) place in Clinical Hypnosis, but let us be clear on what that place is and not fall foul of the mumbo-jumbo and mysticism that has held Hypnosis back for centuries.</p>

<p>Many people who have not done well at weight loss hypnosis programs usually do not have a good picture or have a realistic expectation of what the hypnosis therapy session can bring to them or what it can help to do to their bodies. It is those same bunch of people who thinks that their years of accumulated fat in their body will just disappear with just one session of hypnosis for weight loss program.</p>
<p>Going into such a program without a realistic expectation will most certainly cause the program to fail. No matter you are taking up a new diet program or a gym routine, you need to know what exactly the program is going to do for you and how long it takes and what are the milestones that you can measure against so you know you are making progress.</p>
<p>Taking up a weight loss hypnosis program thinking its a miracle pill is foolhardy. However, if used correctly, the program will give you the extra edge in gaining control over your weight. Engaging a good qualified hypnosis therapist will be tremendously helpful to you. One of the advice that they will give is that weight loss hypnosis is not something that you can use by itself, in that you cannot simply &#8220;think&#8221; your pounds away. If it was that simple, there would not be a need for the existence for gyms and diets. Does that mean that weight loss hypnosis is useless ? Nothing can be further from the truth.</p>

<p>Hypnosis induction is an art to alter the brain and the behavior of some other individual. There exist 2 main types of hypnotic induction &#8211; the concealed and an open one.</p>
<p>The main difference is as follows: with a covert hypnosis induction of the person that is being hypnotized, does not know what is happening, and with the open method the person knows it.</p>
<p>Depending on your needs, you would have to decide which form of induction you need to gain the skill of.</p>
<p>For example, the open hypnosis induction could be used to crack up people at parties &#8211; pick an individual (in case you are taking your first steps, pick people that you see for the first time in your life, rather than someone from your family members or friends). You would tell this individual that you are a hypnotist and that you can hypnotize her/him right there and then, if he/she would like to be hypnotized.</p>
<p>As a starter, you would ask this individual to stand up, to put both his/her hands straight in front of her/him and to close his/her eyes. Then you would say that on the count &#8220;one&#8221; (counting backwards from &#8220;three&#8221;) she/he is going to feel: 1 &#8211; a heavy weight, pulling stronger and stronger at the right hand of the individual, making it go down; 2 &#8211; a large balloon, pulling stronger and stronger at the left hand of the individual, making it lift up.</p>
<p>The individual will usually not feel the hands moving and for that reason will be really surprised to see that the hands have indeed moved in two opposite directions, after opening her/his eyes.</p>
<p>As to the convert hypnosis induction &#8211; you will not tell anyone about that you are going to hypnotize someone.</p>
<p>You will plainly use one of the robust covert conversational hypnosis methods to induce the chosen individual to like you, to follow your lead and to say &#8220;yes&#8221; to your suggestions.</p>
<p>All of this you would fulfill with a particular type of a talk, during which you would make the peripheral awareness of the individual diminish, at the same time &#8220;embedding&#8221; certain triggers in the brain of the hypnotized individual.</p>
